Recreation & Activities

The Cumberland Plateau, located just about an hour west of the renowned Smoky Mountains, is said to be one of the South's best kept secrets. It boasts colors and scenery just as beautiful as the Smokies, with none of the overcrowding to spoil your enjoyment.

If a day at the golf course sounds like your piece of heaven, you will love Cumberland County! With 11 professionally designed golf courses, your choice of greens is unlimited.

For those wanting to enjoy the natural beauty surrounding the county, there are several parks and recreation areas to choose from. The 1700+ acre Cumberland Mountain State Park offers cabin rental and campsites, on-site restaurant, Olympic size swimming pool, playgrounds, walking trails and a Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course just opened in 1998 (The Bear Trace). Other parks of interest include the Ozone Falls

State Natural Area, Meadow Park Lake (considered to be one of the best fishing lakes around), Obed City-County Park, Mount Roosevelt State Forest, Timberline Lodge, and Cherokee Lodge and Resort, not to mention the beautiful Fall Creek Falls State Park, just down the road.

Lesser known areas offer breathtaking views. Black Mountain, near Crab Orchard (2828 ft above sea level), nearby Hinch Mountain (Cumberland County's highest point of elevation at 3,049 ft above sea level), and Cumberland Cove's Overlook offer outstanding views to visitors wishing to get a glimpse of nature's untouched beauty.

For those outdoor enthusiasts, Cumberland County offers championship tennis courts, swimming (indoor and outdoor), sailing and fishing, camping, horseback riding and (seasonal) white water rafting. Hunters will love the 79,000+ acres of state-owned woods known as Catoosa Wildlife Management Preserve.

The Crossville Recreation Park is a 75 acre outdoor area offering multiple ball fields, tennis courts, sand volleyball courts, horse shoe pits, children's playground and half-mile walking trail. Picnic under one of the three large covered shelters while watching the kids (and adults!) having a ball.

Don't miss your chance to attend the Cumberland County Playhouse and view any number of concerts, plays and films held there each year. Professional artists as well as local volunteers wow the audience day after day...

Take in a show at The Palace, originally built in 1937 and fully restored in 2000. Once voted as one of America's 'Great American Movie Theaters', a small group of Cumberland Countians worked extremely hard to have this recognized historical landmark restored to it's original glory.

Take a tour of the local Stonehaus Winery vineyards and winery, where a variety of fine wines are produced daily.

If you're a bargain shopper at heart, visit any one of the 40+ outlet stores located at the Factory Stores of America and receive discounts of 20 - 70% off retail department store prices!

If you'd like to absorb a bit of the area's history, visit the Cumberland General Store and take a step back in time while viewing the general merchandise offered to our ancestors.

Or take a drive just 4 miles south of Crossville into the Cumberland Homesteads- a community of homesteads established during the years of the nation's Depression. 256 families desiring to own their own home were given the opportunity to purchase 5 to 50 acre tracts and provided the essentials for self-sufficiency, including farm animals and tools, as well as a home with all the modern conveniences. The results of their hard work- found in the plush green fields and picturesque stone farm houses- are an integral part of this county's history.
